What is BIM?

We define Building Information Modeling (BIM) as the process of generating and managing an intelligent/three-dimensional building information database during its life cycle. The process produces a 3D Building Information Model (as its acronym BIM), which encompasses building geometry, spatial relationships, geographic information, as well as quantities and properties of building components. By virtually constructing the building and understanding it, risks are mitigated prior to construction. This virtual representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a facility serves as a shared information repository for collaboration throughout its lifecycle to better perform design simulation, conflict analysis, cost, schedule & construction evaluation, and facility management.
